Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Slowly add in the water and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
  2. While the dough is resting, prepare the filling. In a pan, heat the oil and sauté the onion and garlic until they become translucent.
  3. Add the ground meat or vegetables to the pan and cook until they are fully cooked. Stir in the soy sauce, ginger paste, and black pepper. Remove the pan from heat and let the filling cool.
  4. Once the dough is rested, divide it into small balls. Roll each ball into a thin circle.
  5. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each circle. Pinch the edges together to seal the momo, creating a half-moon shape.
  6. Arrange the momos on a steamer basket and steam them for about 15 minutes. You can also pan-fry the momos with a little oil until golden brown.
  7. Serve the momos with a side of tomato-based or sesame-based dipping sauce and enjoy!

  • Kothey Momos: These momos are smaller in size and are often pan-fried. They are a popular snack in Bhutan and are usually served with a spicy chili sauce.
  • Jhol Momos: These momos are cooked in a broth or curry, giving them a unique and flavorful taste. They are popular in the eastern regions of Nepal.
  • Vegetable Momos: For those who prefer a vegetarian option, vegetable momos are a great choice. They can be filled with a variety of vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, and potatoes.
